On April 7, 2025, Yan, the founder of the DappLearning community, conducted an exclusive interview with Vitalik Buterin at the Pop-X HK Research House event in Hong Kong. Below is a summary of the interview content:
Views on POS Upgrade
Vitalik believes that the prices of BTC and ETH are unrelated to POW and POS. The challenge for ETH is how to convert the success of Ethereum applications into the value of Ether. There needs to be more support for applications that have long-term value for ETH holders.
PBS Architecture and Centralization Concerns
Vitalik stated that new technologies such as ZK and DAS allow for asymmetric block construction and verification. Although block construction may be more centralized, solutions like Fossil can limit the power of large nodes, ensuring network security and decentralization.
The Relationship Between Layer 1 and Layer 2
Vitalik believes that L2 does solve the TPS problem, but there are also issues such as slow security progress and poor interoperability. L1 still needs to play an important role, such as in storage proof, cross-chain, and high-value applications. There are plans to increase L1 scalability by 10 times through various solutions.
Ethereum Upgrade Plan
The Pectra upgrade is planned for the end of this month, and the Fusaka upgrade will take place in Q3 or Q4. The upgrade pace will be accelerated by improving coordination efficiency and imposing stricter measures on the client team.
Views on Cryptography and AI
Vitalik believes that ZK developers should focus on high-level languages and do not need to delve into the underlying layers. FHE has good prospects but carries centralization risks. AI may narrow the gap between experts and novices, empowering ordinary people.
Expectations for the Ethereum Ecosystem
I hope developers can create applications that have both real value and sustainable business models, avoiding the extremes of idealism and gambling. Now there are more resources, and good ideas are easier to succeed.
