On July 23, news emerged that House Speaker Johnson expressed his "disappointment" with Fed Chair Powell, following President Trump’s ongoing criticism of the Fed Chair due to dissatisfaction with high interest rates. When asked if he would support Trump in firing Powell, Johnson stated he was unsure whether there was legal authority to remove the Fed Chair. Johnson also hinted at an openness to amending the Federal Reserve Act. This law, enacted in 1913, established the U.S. Central Bank system, and Fed officials have historically resisted such amendments. The last major revision of the law occurred in 2010 as part of the Dodd-Frank Act, aimed at strengthening oversight of large banks in the aftermath of the financial crisis. Johnson added, "I think all reviews are appropriate." He referenced an investigation into the renovation costs of the Fed’s downtown office building, as well as Treasury Secretary Basent's decision to investigate whether the Fed had engaged in "mission creep."
