Ethereum faces calls for generational change! Vitalik Buterin: The growth of the Application Layer requires a "good social philosophy," highlighting the pros and cons of applications.
An Ethereum community member recently called for Ethereum to go through a wave of generational change and talent turnover, and put more energy and attention on building the application layer and activating the demand side, in response to which Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin said that the growth of the application layer is the moment when a good social philosophy is most needed. (Synopsis: Vitalik proposes Ethereum L1 minimalist privacy roadmap: built-in railgun, privacy pool... The default is on) (background added: Ethereum fell below $1500, what does V God think? Vitalik: I don't look) At a time when the future of Ethereum is uncertain, an Ethereum community member recently called for Ethereum to undergo a wave of generations and talent turnover to achieve self-renewal, and the next generation must also be deeply rooted in Ethereum's core values (such as the spirit of cypherpunk): We are really too used to the current set of things (such as protocols, infrastructure, supply-side economic models)... But we're actually heading in a very different direction: the application layer/demand side. In my opinion, we now really need to market support for apps and the ability to attract world-class entrepreneurs by 10x, 100x. In order to slightly correct our current bias, I think we should focus more on building the application layer and activating the demand side. fair take i will concede that generational/talent turnover is needed for ethereum to renew itself. and that next generation needs to be rooted into ethereums values (eg cypherpunk). but omigosh, we are so used to what we know (protocols, infrastructure, supply side… — Kev.Ξth is in Brooklyn (@owocki) April 12, 2025 V God: The growth of the application layer needs good social philosophy the most In response, Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin responded in Warpcast that he actually believes that the growth of the application layer is the moment when good social philosophy is most needed: To use an analogy: imagine if C++ was designed by totalitarian racist fascists, would it become a worse language? Probably not. C++ is a general-purpose language, and it doesn't have much room to be destroyed by a "bad social philosophy" (and certainly hardly reinforced by a "good social philosophy"). This is not entirely the case with Ethereum Layer-1: people who do not believe in decentralization will not join light clients, FOCIL, or (good forms) account abstractions; People who don't mind wasting energy, won't spend five years migrating to PoS...... But in any case, the opcodes for EVMs may be roughly the same, so Ethereum may be 50% generic. What about apps? About 80% of it is private, and what kind of application you develop depends very much on your imagination of what value Ethereum applications should bring to the world, so having great ideas and ideas in this space becomes extremely critical. Vitalik Buterin cites some of the good apps like Railgun, Farcaster, Polymarket, Signal, and the bad ones like Pump.fun, Terra/Luna, FTX, arguing that the difference in apps stems from developers having different beliefs about what they're trying to achieve. The big silly goose is just lucky to be in this position; if it doesn't upgrade quickly, it will die a miserable death. No one is touching Ether anymore; just look at MOODENG, hehe.
