In 2013, when the cryptocurrency industry was still in its primitive era, we, holding a belief in blockchain technology and an expectation for a decentralized future, decided to create a secure, transparent, and fair digital asset trading platform. Now, twelve years later, Gate.io has become one of the world's leading cryptocurrency ecosystem platforms.

Looking back on this journey, we have witnessed the ups and downs of the industry and have gone through countless storms. What have we done right in these twelve years?

Twelve years ago, I quietly launched Bit, which was the predecessor of Gate.io, in a small studio.

Since I was a child, I loved to study technology and was very hands-on, my father was very open-minded about my education, he always encouraged me to explore new things, and I used to spend weekends in bookstores as a child. When I was a child, I almost dismantled all the electrical appliances in the house, but instead of stopping me, my father encouraged me to explore boldly. When I graduated from junior high school, I had the first computer in my life, and at that time I began to teach myself all kinds of computer knowledge and began to program. During my college years, I was already proficient in several computer languages and started my innovation journey, writing several websites and software on my own, which fortunately achieved good traffic and users.

When I first read the Bitcoin white paper, I was deeply shocked and immediately became very interested in this brand new blockchain world. My first Bitcoin transaction was completed through a forum, but unfortunately, I was scammed. It was this "unfortunate experience" that made me realize how important it is to provide a fair and transparent trading platform for users.

With my passion for blockchain, I founded Biter during my postdoc with a simple original intention - to bring a fair, secure, and trustworthy blockchain world to the masses. The technology was not a problem for me, and I was the only one who supported the entire platform at the beginning of the launch, and I took care of all the work on my shoulders. From platform development to operations, marketing, and even customer service, I was in charge of it myself, and now looking back on that time, it seems like I had a lot of fun. At that time, I was immersed in the community almost every day, constantly absorbing innovative ideas and user needs in the industry. At that time, my first reaction was to actively and quickly follow up on industry innovations and hot spots, and I think this was my initial understanding of "blockchain speed", a good habit that I have maintained for 12 years. Remember that in 2013, we were the first platform to launch Dogecoin, and we undertook huge traffic, with 90% of the world's trading volume and half of the tokens in circulation on our platform. At that time, many platforms shy away from these "novelty" coins, but I insisted on innovating and insisting on innovation. Looking back, I'm glad I made that decision.

The awareness of innovation has always run through the development process of Gate.io over the past twelve years. In terms of various latest products and trends, Gate.io has always been the first to take the initiative. From the earliest one-stop wallet Wallet.io, live streaming, squares, and chat rooms, to later quantitative robots and innovation zones, Gate.io has always been at the forefront of the industry. As early as 2014, I applied for a patent for a fingerprint hardware wallet and put this wallet into production. Today, Gate.io has hundreds of such innovative products and technologies. For me, innovation is not a concept that is flaunted, but rather a habitual behavior developed from a young age, as simple and effortless as breathing. The industry is never short of innovation and opportunities, but it also comes with risks that cannot be ignored. Recently, security incidents in the industry have occurred frequently, whether it is the theft of assets on centralized platforms or vulnerabilities in DeFi protocols, security issues have once again become the focus of attention in the entire cryptocurrency industry. I often tell the team that we are in an industry full of opportunities and the greatest potential for development, but we are also experiencing unprecedented severe tests, and opportunities and risks are always inseparable. This is not only a responsibility but also the principle and bottom line we have adhered to for many years.

In 2020, we proposed the method of using Merkle trees for proof of reserves and made it open source, advocating that industry platforms use this method to publish proof of reserves to ensure user safety and peace of mind. It wasn't until the end of 2022, after the FTX collapse, that the industry began to pay attention to it and it was quickly adopted widely up to today.
